2019 FIELD STUDIO /

Reading a resource-based city at human scale

The “Smart Shrinkage · Quality Development” studio was held in Hegang from 1 to 7 July 2019 and connected directly to the fourth SCRNC conference in Harbin on 8 July. Field observation and design experiments addressed spatial surplus, ecological disturbance, ageing urban fabric and the practical limits of growth-led planning.

Designing with a smaller city

Selected boards from the 2019 studio show how teams translated vacancy, ecological repair and local identity into spatial strategies. The archive keeps the proposals together with the workshop summary and the annual programme.

DESIGN RESPONSE /

Reduce, restore and strengthen

The published workshop summary organised the design response as a three-stage strategy rather than a return to automatic expansion.

01 · REDUCE / 瘦身

Work with a smaller scale

Identify surplus space and differentiate the treatment of vacant, abandoned and underused buildings and land.

Repair ecology and place

Connect ecological repair, urban mending and everyday place-making through low-cost, implementable actions.

Build from local identity

Use local knowledge, cultural identity and new development opportunities to support a more resilient transition.

How the workshop entered public view

The 2019 studio was documented through an official school report and later interviews that connected its planning questions to the wider public discussion of Hegang and shrinking cities.
